Shooting the Film

Image
The first day of filming with my partners was less overwhelming than I thought it would be. We filmed on Friday 2/17/23 and Michael brought filming equipment that we had finished setting up and adjusting the lights. There was no point in recording since the class was loud . In 3 rd period , we waited even longer but it was still loud, so we moved on to the voiceover part I was doing. My partners and I went into a small room with not a lot of echoes, and I read through the script. It was pretty difficult getting my voice to stay the same and I had to constantly prep my voice. Luckily, it was a success and in 4th period, the filming began after adjusting the lights and the position of the camera once more. We only had to do a few retakes due to the struggle of remaining in character. We memorized lines from the script and improvised a bit which was perfect, and it added more humor than before.

Preparing to Film

For the film, my teammates and I have already set up part of the filming scene. So far, we’re in the witness testimony and Michael provided a black background, lights, and the library – part of the location we’re using – has provided chairs and good lighting. Michael has provided most of our equipment , including the costumes that he and Ernest are going to wear.  I’m doing the script and going over it with my team. Ernest, Michael, and I are interchangeably filming during each other’s scenes. Just in case we forget the script while recording, Ernest will write down the parts we need to read and hold them up during filming. I’ll mostly be working as the news anchor, so I won’t have to stress much about the parts when I voice over and read the script.

Challenges in Film

The challenges that occur during the filming have more to do with the script. Even though this is a mockumentary and an amateur opening scene, there still has to be a sense of realism in the dialogue and fluidity throughout each transition. Currently, my teammates and I are rewriting and rereading the lines. Although this has proved to be effective, we are also trying to capture comedy that can naturally flow into the scene and not seem forced. Another problem is the voiceover, I am filming a voiceover and I can struggle a bit with maintaining a certain vocal for a certain amount of time. Everyone in the project has been productive and engaged and we're all working together to get through our shortcomings.

Costuming

Image
The costuming for this assignment mainly consists of casual clothing. Since some scenes will involve the locals, the casual costuming will fit how news stations just pop out of nowhere and how nonchalant things usually are even after the robbery. The colors will be more muted or possibly sun-faded since this is a hot area. The burning air will also call for the go-to baseball cap and some sunglasses, or maybe people in a hoodie to shield more than their heads from the heat. The robber himself will have casual clothes with maybe some stains and a disoriented clothing choice, the hair will probably be dirty, a detail that will hint to the desperation and rather sloppy decision making that resulted in the robbery.

Mood Board for Movie

Image
In the mood board, I chose the pictures above since I'm trying to capture the full essence of the short film. Since it's a mockumentary, the robbery will be motivated by candy. The picture of the men in a white shirt and jeans show off the wardrobe of the robber and the police and news being there emphasizes how startled the small town is by the robbery of a gas station.

Movie Opener Brainstorming & Research

Click on the titles to see the videos. Rise - Film Opening While watching this clip, I felt inspired by the long hours of practice that the character went through something that's further evoked by the music that is being played through the headphones. At the end, the close up shots that's taken of the soccer player and the stranger is intense and shows that the history between the two is intense in either a complicated or hateful way. Unavailable Dear Lover The opening in this film is soft and mellow due to the music and cuts to different parts of the scenery that the main character is most likely looking it. Then, the scenes go on with a voiceover that explains where she is now and her motivations behind it. Dare to Thrill Film Opening Daniel Garzon This opening is fast and intense and the hype builds up as the music goes up higher. When the group of kids find the car keys, the shots are diagonal and shaky when they're in the car and the music is louder than their screams
